Best Read Website Stories of 2006

1. Column: Utter Disbelief by Jim Howell

It was a look of utter disbelief.  “Is that really what I just saw?”  “Is that literally what I just heard?”  If you’re looking for a way to see the 2006 AWC Volleyball Team come full circle, that’s probably a good place to start.  11/7

2.  Election - Results Are Tallied Less 2-3,000 Absentee Ballots

With an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 absentee ballots yet to be counted the results from yesterdays election are far from complete. Several races are extremely close and may change by the time all the votes are tallied.   11/8

3.  Birdsall's Reorganization Request Approved by Supervisors

(The County Board of Supervisors approve Steve Birdsall's reorganization request)...Birdsall is the Agriculture Commissioner, Director of Weights and Measures, Air Pollution Control District Director and Director of Airports. He said he needed the reorganization to improve services and efficiency. The need for change resulted from the significant expansion in Birdsall's multi-faceted Department.  11/7

4.  How to Nominate a Teacher of the Week   5/4

5.  County Public Health to Reorganize

(The County Public Health Department gets the go-ahead to reorganize)....Robin Hodgkin, Director of Public Health, told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday the reorganization was needed to cover the obligations of the department and better serve the public. She said Public Health had a problem filling vacancies because the county cannot compete with the pay scales offered at hospitals, Doctors offices and Clinics.  11/7

6.  San Diego State University Teams Up With KXO Radio

7.  Proposed Human Waste Power Plant Not Popular

8. High School Football Scoreboard Week 8   10/20

9. Column - "Playing to Win" by Jim Howell

Playing to win. It’s a phrase that’s so overused in the world of sports that it might as well have its own entry in the dictionary. Don’t get me wrong. That phrase arguably determines just about everything that goes on in athletics.  Coaches gain and lose jobs in an instant because of it.  Players sacrifice just about anything (including their health and their integrity if they’re in professional baseball, cycling or track & field) to do it.   Young, impressionable future athletes pursue those top athletes already in the limelight because they think the top athletes know what the phrase means.  8/11

10. Imperial County Elections are Heating Up

(This Tuesday's Elections are going to be different)...Some sat they already are. They are different in that, some of the normally least controversial offices are featuring some of  the hottest contested races.    5/31

Bad Joke:

The Lone Ranger and Tonto were camping in the desert. After they had set up their tent, they laid down for a restful night. After a few hours, the Lone Ranger wakes his faithful companion. "Tonto, look up in the sky and tell me what you see." Tonto replied, "Me see millions of stars." The Lone Ranger asked, "What does that tell you?" Tonto pondered the question for a minute. "Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, it's evident that the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Keemosabi?" The Lone Ranger stared silently at his friend for a moment, and then said, "Tonto, you idiot! It means someone has stolen our tent!"
