Preliminary Estimates are that Freedom Fest was Very Successful
(The 17th annual Freedom Fest was a resounding success)…..Despite record temperatures, organizers say the Fourth of July festivities at Imperial Valley College were very successful.
Gene Brister, on the organizing committee, said attendance was surprisingly good. The estimate is that on-campus attendance appeared to be about the same as last year’s event. The California Highway Patrol reported about 65,000 witnessed the fireworks display last year, both on-campus, and from surrounding areas. Last year organizers did not have to contend with the record heat. Temperatures hit 116 Wednesday. This year, however, Freedom Fest did not have to compete against personal fireworks, since they were banned in most areas of the County. County fire officials say despite the temperatures and the attendance, there was only one medical aide reported. They say medical assistance was provided to one woman who was a bit dehydrated. They say the incident was not considered serious.
