(CHP releases report on traffic fatality)…The tragedy occurred early Tuesday morning.
According to the report, 35 year old Jose Salcedo was riding a Suzuki motorcycle North on Highway 111 at around 5:00 am. Marcos Lopez was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle. The Highway Patrol says just north of the intersection with Evan Hewes Highway, Lopez fell off the back of the Motorcycle. The CHP says Salcedo went back to the scene. In the meantime, Lopez tried to limp out of the number two lane of Highway 111. Before he could, he was struck by a 1998 Dodge pick-up, driven by 60-year-old Luis Jimenez of Calexico. The pick-up hit Lopez and tossed him about 40 feet in the air. Jimenez swerved onto the right dirt shoulder and stopped his vehicle. A second pick-up, driven by 46-year-old Oscar Montano from Holtville, was following behind, also in the number two lane. The Highway Patrol says Montano did not see Lopez, who had landed back of the Highway. The Holtville pick-up hit the victim, dragging him 200 feet, before stopping on the asphalt shoulder. Paramedics pronounced Lopez dead at the scene. The intersection was closed, as Imperial County Fire worked to free the body from under the Holtville Pick-up. Salcedo left the scene, but was tracked down by CHP Investigators, Officer Arroyo and Officer Beltran. They arrested the suspect. He was booked into County Jail, charged with Felony Driving under the Influence of Alcohol, Felony Hit and Run and Felony Gross Vehicular Manslaughter. |
