Multi-Alarm Fire In Calexico

A fire in a downtown Calexico building caused extensive damage Sunday afternoon.

The fire , at Second Street and Heber Avenue , was reported at about 12:40 Sunday afternoon. Calexico Fire Department responded with all available personnel and also requested mutual aid from the Imperial County , Brawley and El Centro Fire Departments because of the proximity of other buildings and the threat of the fire spreading. The fire was quickly contained to the back portion of the building , the old Western Auto Stores service center. Calexico Fire Chief Pete Mercado told KXO News that the building now houses a restaurant. The fire crept into the attic of the front part of the building , a portion that houses several small businesses , but was quickly extonguished by firefighters. No other buildings were affected by the flames. Clean up operations began almost immediatly after the fire was out. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
