(How do you keep people from swimming in the local canals?)…..There is a group discussing that issue.
It was formed after the recent drowning death of a Calexico teen in the All American Canal. The group consists of representatives from the City of Calexico, the Calexico Unified School District, the Imperial Irrigation District and public safety representatives. They met this week to discuss the issue. One suggestion was for more fencing. It was agreed the City of Calexico would be responsible for fencing canals within their area. IID General Manager Kevin Kelley suggested developing an educational program that would focus on older teens and young adults. He said the Dippy Duck campaign is effective, but its focus is on the younger population. It was suggested the local media be used to get out the message. The group discussed several suggestions, and said they would continue at a later date, but no date was set for the next meeting.
