(Monsoonal storm sweeps through the region)…It began Thursday afternoon in Yuma.

Strong winds knocked down power poles, advertising signs, and trees. A mobile home was topped and a big rig was blown over. Rains flooded some streets. The storm moved west. The Imperial Irrigation District says over 1300 of their customers in Winterhaven lost power. 1,000 of those customers are not expected to have the lights back on until some time this afternoon or possibly tonight. At around 44 mile per hour winds struck Mexicali, Calexico and El Centro. Power outages were reported in the south section of El Centro at just before 7:00 pm. About 850 IID customers were in the dark. By 9:00 pm 600 customers were brought back on line. Crews worked throughout the night to restore the rest of the affected customers. The District says 24 power poles were knocked down. Trees were blown over, including one that destroyed part of the fence at Wilson Jr. High School. Crews were out Friday morning cleaning up debris and other damage caused by the storm, which brought .04 inches of rain to the area. The National Weather Services says chances for more precipitation will continue for the next few days.
