A car with over $750-,000 in cash hidden inside the gas tank was stopped by U.S. law enforcement officers in Calexico Monday morning.
The incident occurred at about 10:00 a.m. when U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers along with members of the Imperial Valley Enforcement Secuirty Task Force ( IV BEST ) were conducting inspections of vehicles in the U.S. headed south to Mexico at the downtown Calexico port of entry. Officers with a currency/firearms detector dog , checked a 2005 Honda Accord , driven by a 24-year old woman , a U.S. citizen. The dog alerted to the car which was then screened more thoroughly. 42 packages , vacuum sealed clear plastic bags , were found floating in the gas tank. The bags contained $762,930 in unreported U.S. currency. CBP officers seized the cash and the vehicle. The driver was turned over to the IV BEST team. The U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego will prosecute the driver.
