(Structure Fire in Calexico)...It was reported at just after 8:00 Monday morning.
Calexico Fire responded to the scene at Rockwood and 3rd Street, to find a two story structure fully engulfed in flames. The situation went to 4 alarms, calling in Fire Crews from Departments around the county, including Yuma and Centenela. The firefighters could not enter the old Elks Lodge, because the flames were too intense. They were able to keep the fire from spreading to surrounding structures. Damage to the building was extensive, and officials say the building remains very unstable. They say that will make an investigation into the cause of the fire very difficult. Witnesses say the building had been abandoned for years, and inhabited mostly by the homeless. No injuries have been reported. Because the remains are so unstable, it has been cordoned off in an attempt to keep everyone from entering the burnt out building.
