El Centro Sector U.S. Border Patrol agents visited schools throughout Imperial County for 2019 Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol , tobacco , and other drug and violence awareness campaign observed every October. It began as a tribute to fallen Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Enrique         " Kiki " Camarena in 1985. Camarena , a Calexico native , was tortured and slain by members of a Mexican drug cartel. Border Patrol agents visited 24 schools and approximately 8,000 students giving presentations on the dangers of substance abuse.
