Captain Devon Jones has been relieved of his command at the Naval Air Facility El Centro.
The announcement was made today by Rear Admiral Dixon R. Smith , Commander , Navy Region Southwest. The action came , " due to loss of faith and confidence in his ability to command " , according to the Navy's press release. Capt. Jones has been at NAF El Centro since August of 2011. Commander Erik Franzen , NAF El Centro Executive Officer , will assume CO duties until a permanent successor is named. Capt. Jones will be assigned to Commander , Naval Air Forces until the outcome of the issue is reached. The news release went on to say , " The Navy expects its leaders to provide principled and highly ethical leadership , stressing discipline , accountability and the importance of treating shipmates with dignity and respect. It is of paramount importance to the Navy that even the appearance of impropriety by leadership is unacceptable , and all personnel must conduct themselves in a manner beyond reproach." Capt. Jones was commissioned a naval officer in 1986 and flew F-14's and F-18's , serving in Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
NAF El Centro is a Navy aviation training site and the winter home of the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron , The Blue Angels.
