A house was destroyed by fire in El Centro Tuesday evening.

Shortly before 6:00 p.m. the El Centro Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the 800 block of South 18th Street. On arrival firefighters began an attack on the house that was fully engulfed in flames. The residents of the house were able to escape with out injuries and firefighters were able to rescue several family pets. One firefighter was injured when he had to abandon his position on the roof because of the flames and smoke. Battling 104 degree temperatures and a west wind at about 20 miles per hour , efforts were concentrated on containing the fire and keeping it from spreading to neighboring houses. El Centro Fire issued a mutual aid request and were assisted by personnel and equipment from Imperial County , the cities of Calipatria , Brawley , Calexico , Westmorland , Holtville and Imperial as well as NAF El Centro and Centinela State Prison. The fire was contained after about an hour and a half but  personnel remained on the scene to guard against flare ups. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
