The Consumer Call Protection Act ( SB 208 ) has advanced in the State Senate.
The bill , sponsored by Senator Ben Hueso , aims to stop illegal robocall scams known as " neighbor Spoofing " where scammers attempt to trick consumers into answering calls from imposters posing as local callers. The bill would set a deadline for telecommunications providers to implement Caller ID authentication measures which would identify the illegal robocallers. Neighbor spoofing occurs when a caller fakes a local phone number , tricking consumers into answering a call they believe is local. When answered , the call usually contains a pre-recorded message attempting to scam the consumer. The bill would also ensure that the California Public Utilities Commission can collaborate with the State Attorney General's Office to support action against the illegal robocallers.
