El Centro Police are investigating a suspicious fire that was reported shortly after 9:00 p.m. Thursday.

The initial call to ECPD dispatch center was for a burglary at a residence in the 500 block of Yucca Drive in El Centro. The homeowner reported that when he arrived home it appeared that someone had broken into the house. He than reported that there was smoke coming from inside the residence. The back door had apparently been kicked in and that some of his property had been left outside the door and the house appeared to have been ransacked. El Centro Fire Department responded and were able to contain the fire. Police say that a person of interest in the burglary and fire is possibly a tenant who lived in a rear studio apartment of the house and had recently been evicted. The Red Cross responded to the scene and were able to assist the 6 residents of the home. No injuries were reported. The investigation of the burglary and fire is on-going.
