The Imperial County jobless rate for May is being estimated at 22.8 percent. The Labor Market Information Division of the Employment Development Department says that is down from the revised 25 % recorded for April. It is below the year ago estimate of 28.2 percent. This compares to the unadjusted unemployment rate of 8.1 percent for the state and 7.3 percent for the nation. While down, the Imperial County jobless rate is still the highest in the state. The latest numbers indicate 17,500 eligible workers were looking for a job in May, out of a labor force estimated at 78,800.
