The El Centro Fire Department says that arson is suspected as the cause of the Monday morning fire in downtown El Centro.
The fire was spotted at about 3:37 a.m. Monday when an El Centro Police patrol sergeant followed a trail of smoke to 598 Main Street. A plate glass window had been shattered and the second floor of the building was on fire. El Centro Fire Department responded to the scene.
According to the police department , a witness in the area saw a subject walking away from the building and then rode off on a BMX-style bike.. The witness described that subject as wearing all black clothing. Based on the circumstances and evidence at this time , arson is suspected.
