(Early morning fire)…It was reported in downtown El Centro.

The 3-alarm fire was first reported at 3:30 Monday morning. Departments from El Centro, Brawley, Calexico, NAF, The County and Centela State Prison all responded. The fire was in the old Rehkopf Building that housed Brook's Jewelry and Gifts for many years and was currently occupied by El Dorado Printing.  At 4:20 in the morning power was knocked out to a section of downtown, from 4th St. to Imperial Avenue. Battalion Chief Cessena said the fire completely destroyed the historic building, but neighboring buildings were spared. The cause of the fire has not been determined. The Chief said arson is suspected. No injuries were reported. The Imperial Irrigation District had power restored by 10:00 Monday morning.
