(High Speed chase)…It ended tragically yesterday afternoon.

The chase occurred on westbound Interstate 8 near the Acorn Casino in Campo. Officials say a Chevy Silverado was being pursued by Border Patrol agents. The pursuit reached 100 miles per hour. The agents attempted to stop the pickup by laying down a spike strip. The vehicle hit the strip, went out of control and overturned, before striking an embankment. The pickup was carrying 2 people in the passenger compartment nine people in the bed. The nine were all ejected. Three people suffered fatal injuries. The rest were transported to San Diego area hospitals. Three with major injuries. The others suffered minor injuries. The driver has been placed under arrest. The Border Patrol has not commented and it is not known where the chase began. The incident was reported at 4:30 Thursday afternoon.
