(A determination on Sunday fatal fire expected, soon)…Ken Herbert with the El Centro Fire Department said the investigation is still underway.
He said an announcement could be made very soon. Herbert said 22-year-old Alexis Carrillo and her 3-year-old child died from injuries suffered in the apartment fire early Sunday morning. 21-year-old Javier Rico was transported to a San Diego area Burn unit for treatment of his injuries. El Centro Fire was called at 3:00 Sunday morning. When they arrived they found a lot of smoke, and the 21 year old outside. He was bleeding and suffering from smoke inhalation. They say he had tried to rescue the woman and the child from the burning apartment, but was not successful; Fire fighters were able to rescue the woman and the three year old. They were all transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment. Deputy Coroner Sergeant Eric Frazier said the condition of the woman and child worsened, and they succumbed from their injuries later that morning. Herbert said they were not releasing the name of the child at this time.
