(Human Smuggling was the topic)…It was at the 4th Binational Conference to prevent, suppress and punish human trafficking.
It was held at the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce. The conference Wednesday featured several speakers from both sides of the International Border, including Perla Del Socorro Ibarra Leyva, the Attorney General for Baja California, Mexico. The purpose was to raise awareness of Human Trafficking, a $32 billion a year global industry. Organizers say approximately 27 million people are slaves in the world today. Next to the drug trade, human trafficking ranks second as the largest form of organized crime in the world. It is estimated that each year, nearly 18,000 people, primarily women and children, are trafficked into the United States.
