($4 million awarded to study asthma control among Latino children)….The award was presented by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
The award was presented to Doctors John Elder and Guadalupe Ayala of San Diego State University’s Institute for Behavioral and Community Health. They will partner with Clinicas De Salud to study ways to decrease rates of uncontrolled asthma among Latino children in the Imperial County and improve their quality of life. Imperial County was among 8 sites across the nation to receive funding targeting better asthma control among Hispanics/Latinos and African Americans. It is reported that 1 in 5 children in Imperial County are affected by asthma, a rate that is twice as high as the national average. It is estimated that 75% of the children that visited emergency rooms in 2012 with uncontrolled asthma were Latino.
