The California Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic accident that resulted in three deaths late yesterday afternoon.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:47 PM at the intersection of State Route 115 and Worthington Road in the Holtville area. According to Officer Flores of the CHP , a 1999 Honda Accord was westbound on Worthington Road and apparently failed to stop at the stop sigh at Highway 115. A Tractor-Trailer rig that was northbound on Highway 115 was unable to stop and broad sided the Honda. The driver of the big rig , 38-year old Juan Carlos Herrera of Santa Maria , was not injured. The driver of the Honda , a 63-year old Brawley man was pronounced dead at the scene as were two of his three passengers. A 25-year old man and a 22-year old man , both from Brawley. A third passenger , Jose Luis Cruz , 21, also of Brawley , was flown to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs with major injuries. Traffic was detoured around the scene for over 12 hours as emergency crews and investigators were working. The accident remains under investigation.
