Mecca Man Dies In Traffic Accident


The California Highway Patrol reports a 21-year old Mecca, California man died in a traffic accident early Saturday morning.

According to CHP Officer Miguel Lizarraga , a 2004 Nissan Sentra was westbound on Interstate 8 near the 4th Street exit in El Centro at about 5:50 A.M. The driver , 20-year old Oscar Farias Sanchez , of Mecca , allowed the car to drift off the roadway onto the dirt center divider of the freeway. Sanchez apparently overcorrected  , skidded out of control , crossed the westbound lanes before going down an embankment and overturning. The driver and the front seat passenger were wearing restraints but , three passengers sleeping in the rear seat were not wearing seat belts. All three rear seat passengers were ejected from the car with two receiving major injuries and one fatal injuries. Sanchez , the driver , and the front seat passenger received minor injuries. The identity of the fatally injured passenger has not been released. According to the Highway Patrol , the five men in the car were returning from Mexicali on their way back to Mecca when the accident occurred. Alcohol is not an attributing factor to the accident. The accident remains under investigation.
