(County agrees to work with the City of El Centro)…The County Supervisors approved the MOU Tuesday.
The Memorandum of Understanding is for the two entities to develop a funding plan to clean up an illegal disposal site. The illegal site is near Cruikshank Road, near Highway 111, south of Imperial Valley College. Public Works Director William Brunet says the site was created following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck the area in 1940. Brunet said the site was fenced to prevent any new dumping, but there have been no attempts to clean up the site. CalRecycle now has said the illegal site must be cleaned up. Brunet said it is estimated to cost over $3 million to do the work. The site is on City of El Centro land and on County land, which is the reason for the joint agreement. The County, because of its experience with solid waste sites, will be the lead agency in the clean up.
