When leaving the house last night to attend the Elena Duran Concert I had no idea what to expect. The concert was held in the San Diego State University Imperial Valley Campus, Rodney Auditorium. The Auditorium its self is remarkable in its structure and history. Just sitting in this auditorium is awe-inspiring.
The Concert was called the Flauta sin Fronteras with Elena Duran accompanied on the piano by Fausto diaz. We were entertained by a remarkable woman, who commented on the music and her representation of music across the boarder using her flute to entertain the public and especially school children to the wonders and fulfillment of music in their lives.
I walked away with a heartfelt message from a world acclaimed musician of a true passion for embracing the opportunities in life that music provides as it had provided for her. During many of Elena's commentary moments between performances, she credited the California public education system from Oakland California, for sparking her passion for music and affording her the opportunities to experience the rich rewards of music and a passion for music in her life. She encouraged all of us to appreciate our opportunities and follow our passions. Elena reminded me why I had elected a major in music during college years ago. She warmly captivated the audience for over an hour and left to a standing ovation. Her encore was another message to the youth and the audience, - “I’m very grateful for this opportunity to have been here this evening, and thank you for coming.” As I turned to leave I noticed the majority of the crowd had made their way to the stage to meet Elena and request autographs. While there were many in attendance, and the room fairly full, I wondered afterward why the room was not overflowing. I wondered if the general public and particularly school age children and their parents have not realized the opportunities San Diego State University provides to the community free of charge. The abundant culturally diverse opportunities that are not as easily available in many areas of the country are truly a missed opportunity for growth, enlightenment, education, and entertainment if your not attending them. There is always something to do for entertainment, which will enrich the lives of your families when the community is blessed with a University such as San Diego State, Imperial Valley Campus and it's community leadership and programs for the enrichment of the communities it serves. |
