Yuma, Arizona - Famed Arizona artist Zarco Guerrero will be visiting Yuma this weekend, beginning with a presentation open to the public on Friday evening, September 14th at 5:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by NAU-Yuma, in room 279 of the Academic Complex building, on the campus shared with AWC.
Zarco Guerrero may be best known for his work in mask making. He has studied the Noh masks of Japan, receiving the prestigious Japan Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. A PBS documentary The Mask of El Zarco has been broadcast nationally. His Face to Face in a Frenzy is a one-man performance in which masks are used extensively. He has also studied mask carving in Bali, Indonesia and China.
Guerrero is a multi-faceted artist, receiving recognitions for his work in other media. He performed for many years with the band Zum Zum Zum. His life size bronze sculpture of labor activist Cesar Chavez was a commissioned piece by the City of Phoenix. He has been actively involved in the production of powerful anti-violence videos for television.
Xicanindio Artes, Inc. a non-profit organization was founded by Guerrero to promote a better understanding of Latino and Native American arts. He has participated in the Artist in Education program and conducted numerous workshops throughout the U.S. since the early ‘70s. He was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award, and received the Scottsdale Arts Council’s Chairman’s Artist award, for his contributions to the arts.
Following the Friday evening event, the work of Zarco Guerrero will be on display at the Yuma Fine Arts Museum, opening with a reception Saturday the 15th.
