| Imperial, California - As part of the Associated Students’ celebration of National Hispanic Week at Imperial Valley College, the Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post 9305 and San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus co-sponsored a presentation by Dr. Maggie Rivas Rodriguez of the University of Texas at Austin. Before an audience of students, administrators and U.S. armed forces veterans, Dr. Rivas spoke on Ken Burns’ “The War” a 15-hour documentary scheduled to be premiered nationally by Public Broadcasting System affiliates on September 23. Specifically, Dr. Rivas addressed the omission in Burns’ documentary of more than half-a-million Latino participants in the most significant historical event of the 20th centuryWorld War II and the implications of this omission for the teaching of history in the U.S. Dr. Rivas is the founder of Defend the Honor Campaign, a national movement intended to correct this omission in Burns’ documentary as well as in its companion book and other materials intended for use in the teaching of history in U.S. educational institutions. A recent agreement between Florentine Films, the producer of the documentary, and the American G.I. Forum, a Latino veterans organization, to add interviews with Native American and Latino WWII veterans to Burns’ work does not, according to Dr. Rivas, resolve the basic issuethe work’s distorted view of history. Simultaneous English-Spanish interpretation of Dr. Rivas’ presentation was provided by students of court interpreting at SDSU-Imperial Valley Campus. |
