Irvine, California, October 13.  At Friday's conference of the southern California chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Dr. Rogelio Reyes, coordinator of the translation and court interpreting programs at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus, outlined what he hypothesizes to be the main problem in English-Portuguese translation: the hegemony of the English language in the 21st century vis à vis the lack of a unified language policy among the Portuguese-speaking countries of the world.

Awarded a grant by the International Rotarian Foundation, Dr. Reyes plans to research this problem at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2007.

Among the conference’s other informative, sometimes heated, sessions on literature, language teaching, and translation studies, were Ignacio Solares’ keynote speech on his best-selling novel, La invasion (‘The Invasion’); Juan Bruce Novoa’s analysis of Mariano Azuela’s novel of the Mexican Revolution Los de abajo (‘The Underdogs’); James Parr’s comparison of different English translations of Cervantes’ Don Quijote and Tirso de Molina’s El Burlador de Sevilla (‘The Trickster of Seville’); etc.
