Newport Beach - Several students of the Translation/Court Interpreting Certificate  Program at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus received a warm welcome at the California Court Interpreters Association’s annual conference here, October 7-9.

With the support of CCIA scholarships for the purpose, the students, along with more than 200 professional interpreters from different parts of California and other states of the Union, participated in sessions that ranged from the workshop on the translation of English legal texts by Enrique Alcaraz Varo (University of Alicante, Spain)  to a session on the problems of interpreting in domestic violence trials by the Honorable Donal Donnely’s (Superior Court of Imperial County).  Among the numerous other sessions was Dr. Rogelio Reyes’ (SDSU-Imperial Valley Campus) analysis of AB 775, which, if passed, will ban the use of children as medical interpreters in California.

The conference provided the students with a privileged inside look at the current challenges and opportunities of the court interpreting profession.  The CCIA is promoting the certification of a new generation of interpreters in more than 200 languages.  Currently, a typical interpreter’s salary is approximately $60,000 per year.

Persons interested in becoming certified court interpreters should contact Dr. Rogelio Reyes, tel. 760 768-5532
