Calexico, California - Last night at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus, before an audience of more than 40 people, Jayme Margolin of the Education and Outreach Department of UNAVCO updated her lecture of last February on the Brawley Campus on the subject of “Tectonic Plates: Revealing the Earth’s Secrets”.
Margolin explored the structure and evolution of the North American continent and tectonic plates using Global Positioning System (GPS). UNAVCO, an independent non-profit corporation funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation (NSF), supports research using high-precision techniques for measuring crustal deformation, including GPS, borehole strainmeters, tiltmeters, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), and Light Distance and Ranging (LIDAR). Margolin also informed the audience of the latest tectonic plate measuring instruments installed on the Brawley Campus of SDSU.
Moderated by Dr. Fernando Rodriguez-Valls and sponsored by the Faculty Lecture Series, Margolin’s lecture included simultaneous English-Spanish interpretation, compliments of the campus court interpreting certificate students. The evening ended with a campus-wide celebration. sponsored by the Associated Student Council, of the start of the 2008-09 academic year.
