Yuma, Arizona - Northern Arizona University’s Branch Campus in Yuma has announced the availability to accept a small number of additional students into the new Speech Pathology program to begin Friday, September 21, 2007.
There is a nation-wide shortage of professionals in the field of speech-language pathology, particularly critical within school settings and educational environments. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has identified Arizona as one of the top five states with the most urgent need
.
To address this need, NAU-Yuma will begin offering a Masters program in speech pathology in the Fall of 2008. Students with undergraduate education in communication disorders or related fields might qualify to apply directly to that program. To enable prospective students with other Bachelors degrees to qualify, Northern Arizona University is offering locally the foundation classes necessary prior to beginning graduate studies.
Referred to as a “bridge” program, this year will consist of 12 credits, offered primarily as face-to-face classes taught during the weekends, but also incorporating instructional television and web-enhanced coursework. The instructors for the local classes will be from NAU’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in Flagstaff.
The CSD Department is the recipient of a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This grant is to support collaboration between classroom teachers and speech-language pathologists assisting struggling readers. This offers an additional benefit to those considering either the 2007-2008 bridge program or next year’s Masters program offered by NAU-Yuma.
