The Imperial County Office of Education has been selected to receive funding from the TEAM GEAR UP program.
The grant, in the amount of $1,579,000 , means all seventh graders at eleven Imperial County schools will be part of TEAM UP GEAR which is designed to increase the number of low-income students who will be prepared to enter and succeed in college. A scoring error originally contributed to a denial of the grant by the U.S. department of Education but a request for reconsideration by Congressman Bob Filner resulted in re-evaluation and a subsequent funding of the program. A partnership of the Imperial County Office of Education and The University of California, San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus, Imperial County Partnership for Higher Education, all county school districts and community partners will use the money to change the culture of low college expectations and increase college attendance. A portion of the funding will be used to offer college scholarships. |
