Yogyakarta Indonesia - An earthquake flattened homes and hotels in central Indonesia on Saturday, killing at least 4,300 and injuring thousands. Death tolls are expected to increase as bodies are discovered. The magnitude-6.3 quake struck at 5:54 a.m. near the city of Yogyakarta, 250 miles east of, Jakarta. Thousands of residents fled into the streets, and some feared a tsunami would strike. Hospitals are being overwhelmed with victims. The city is about 18 miles from the sea. In the chaos that followed the quake, false rumors of an impending tsunami sent thousands of people fleeing to higher ground in cars and on motorbikes. |
