(County supports MOU with Sea to Sea Development)…The County Supervisors say the support continues talks.

The project would bring water from the Sea of Cortez to the Salton Sea. According to the plans, the water would go through a desalinization plant at the Laguna Salada, before crossing the International Border. The new water would be used to cover dried Salton Sea bed. As the Sea recedes, the increase shoreline is anticipated to create major air-quality issues for Coachella valley, Imperial Valley and the Mexicali Valley. The Salton Sea Authority will discuss the memorandum at their next meeting. The County says supporting the Memorandum of Understanding only means staff will continue to talk with the Sea-to-Sea Development Team, led by Gary Jennings of Utility Solutions. They say there are several questions that need to be answered. One is Mexico’s thoughts on the plan. Mexico must approve transporting the water, as well as construction of any type at the Laguna Salada. Costs also must be addressed. The Supervisors said all projects must be discussed. They said if the Salton Sea were to be saved, the County would have to do it through a public/private project. They said they couldn’t count on the State for any support.
