(Activists go for a swim and are cited)…John Hunter of San Diego led a group of activists to protest at Tuesdays IID Board meeting. After accusing the Imperial Irrigation District Board of being irresponsible and dragging it’s feet to install safety lines across sections of the All American Canal, they walked out of the meeting before they could hear the District’s plan to install the buoyed lines and other safety measures. Hunter led his followers to an area about 28 miles east of Calexico. The Brother of former Congressman Duncan Hunter and activist filmmaker John Carlos Frey donned wet suits and jumped into the All American Canal. They set-up a safety line, and then asked their followers to call authorities. When IID vehicles, Border Patrol and Sheriff’s Deputies arrived, the two went back into the canal so they could be seen. The Deputy cited them for misdemeanor trespass. Frey said the display in front of followers and media was to show how easy it was to install the lines. He said it took seven minutes, and not the 10 months it has taken the IID. The District has informed Hunter in the past that the IID was not the responsible party for any work on the All American Canal. They informed him several times the concrete lining was being paid for by the San Diego County Water Authority, and the Canal was owned by the federal Government. Those are the responsible parties who must approve the installation of anything on the Canal. Critics have said the activists are trying to bully the IID to do their bidding for publicity purposes. |
