(Piping the New River planned)….Calexico residents and politicians have been pushing to have the polluted River covered through Calexico for years. Congressman Bob Filner now says the work will be done as part of a planned new Port of Entry. General Services Administration plans to construct an expanded Port West of the current Port. Construction is planned to begin in 2011. Congressman Filner says he has been able to convince his House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to add a resolution including two provisions to Gas’s plans. One is to coordinate and consult with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to submit a report to the Committee within 180 days, on options to plan, design and construct covering and or piping underground the New River, from the International Border to Highway 98. The resolution also calls for five southbound lanes for passenger vehicles. |
