Supervisors agree on motto display PDF Print E-mail

(Motto focus of heated discussion)…It was not the religious aspect of the motto, however.

It was how it was going to be displayed. In December 2008 the Board of Supervisors at that time agreed with Tony Ramos’ request to display the motto “In God We Trust” in the Supervisors Chambers. The point of contention has been how the motto will be displayed. Ramos wanted the display to be in block letters with a wood frame, similar to the one installed in the Imperial Irrigation District’s Condit Auditorium. The Chairman of the Board, Wally Leimgruber, and the County Executive Officer wanted the display to be a bit more patriotic. They wanted a poster sized color display that includes the U.S. Flag, a Bald Eagle and the motto. Leimgruber said “In God We Trust” was the nations motto and that is how it should be displayed. A lengthy discussion, including Ramos’s accusation that the County just wanted to avoid the possibility of litigation. It was finally decided to go with the more colorful Flag and Eagle display, and to avoid any semblance of religious preference; the County would pay for it.
