(El Centro Police respond to four incidents that could be connected)….The calls began coming in at 2:00 Friday morning.

Commander Ron Meredith says the first call came from the Owl Café on Main Street in El Centro. Meredith says officers responded to a report of a battery. The victim at the scene said he had been jumped by several other subjects. As officers were taking that report, another call came in reporting a physical disturbance in front of the Spot, just down the street from the Owl. That disturbance involved two females. The Commander says one of the females told officers her male cousin was the victim in the first assault. Meredith says as officers were interviewing that victim, dispatch received a call for a medical aid, requesting an ambulance for a victim of a separate assault. Officers found the 29-year-old victim lying in a parking lot across from the Owl. Meredith says the victim was bleeding profusely from the mouth and nose. He was treated by paramedics and transported to the Hospital. Officers were trying to interview witnesses when another physical disturbance was reported. This time on 7th Street, just north of Main Street. It was reported ten male subjects were involved in an altercation. Officers were able to separate the combatants. All were cooperative, except one. That individual had to be tazed before he could be brought under control. Meredith says it is still not known if all four incidents were connected. He said 24-year-old Francisco Javier Avina was booked into County Jail, charged with battery in the first report. Twenty-five year old Marcellus Washington of El Centro was booked into County Jail on battery charges in the last altercation. Curtis White, a 30-year-old El Centro resident was also charged with battery in the last altercation. Thirty-year-old Gary Shelton Jr. was booked for resisting arrest and delaying officers. Meredith says it is still not known who assaulted the victim found in the parking lot. All four incidents are still under investigation. El Centro police were assisted by officers of the Imperial Police Department and the California Highway Patrol in responding to the various calls.
