Graphic material handed out erroneously

(AIDS information not appropriate for High School students)….That is the claim from Bonnie Munguia, a Deputy Principal at Brawley Union High School. She went before the County Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Munguia said AIDS prevention material was recently passed out at Health Fair at BUHS. The material is very explicit and uses very graphic language. A stamp on the pamphlet indicates it came from the Imperial County Public Health Department. Munguia said similar material had been disbursed by Clinicas De Salud Del Pueblo at another Health Fair at another High School. The Deputy Principal, who told the Supervisors she was speaking as a concerned citizen, said she was also upset that County funds were spent of such sexually graphic material. Public Health Department Director Robin Hodgkins later said she was aware of the complaint. She said she did not know how the material was obtained by the Brawley students. Hodgkins said the material is age specific for adults and not for High School aged students. The Director said the material was not on display at the Health Fair, and not handed out by Health Department employees. She apologized for the material falling in the wrong hands. Hodgkin’s said the material is provided by the California AIDS Clearing House, and is not paid for with County funds.
