George Gale was born in Glendale, California. He later moved to the San Fernando Valley in the mountains now known as Valencia, close to where Magic Mountain is now located. Magic Mountain did not exist then. Following the Watts Riots in 1965 George’s parents decided the Country was coming apart, and they moved the family to Mexicali, Mexico.
.
While living in Los Angeles County George and his three brothers were very into music. His older brother, Rick, however, was the only one with any musical talent. His younger brother, Don, had a perfect memory for the singers and songwriters while his youngest brother, Steve, just liked music. As for George, he was fascinated with the Disc Jockeys, or On-Air Personalities. George was very impressed with Joe Yokum and B. Mitchell Reed on KFWB, which was George’s Dad’s favorite station, and was the Rock and Roll Station for Los Angeles in the late 50’s. His attention then went to KRLA, where Casey Kasim, Bob Eubanks, Bob Hudson and others worked. KHJ and Boss Radio then became a favorite with Robert W. Morgan, The Real Don Steel, Machine Gun Kelley. All are considered his heroes.
.
When the family we moved to Mexico George would cut school to listen to the radio, T Tom Turner being his favorite personality. George remembers a visit with T TOM, and he gave him advise on becoming an a Radio Disc Jockey. Baseball was George’s other passion, and he decided that would be his goal in life. The Baseball dream came to an end quickly. When George was seventeen he developed arthritis in his left knee and was on crutches for a year.
.
George traded baseball for marriage and he joined the Navy. When George returned from Vietnam he had a wife and baby to support, so George did anything he could to make some money. He worked in the Agriculture Fields picking melons, weeding lettuce, picking asparagus and green onions.
.
George’s fame began when he was an extra in a movie filming near San Felipe, a silly little western called Zacharia. Actually the movie was before he went to Vietnam, because George got to see it on his ship, the U.S.S. Harold E. Holt, while in the Gulf of Tonkin. George went on to get a job with the Federal Government. He was one of the original crew for the General Services Administration.
.
In 1980 a new FM radio station was coming on the air in Imperial, and George decided to give it a shot. George was hired as a weekender at KOZN. When his supervisor heard him on the radio he told George he was much better on the radio than he was as a maintenance man. George was offered a full-time position working overnights at FM 99, and he took it.
.
George Gale has not looked back since. When KOZN began to fold he was hired in Brawley, and then George came to KXO. He has been doing On-Air and/or News for the past 27 years in Imperial Valley. George states he enjoys it as much today as he did when he started in 1980.
