Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced that AWC Volleyball player Patty Paniagua has received the inaugural ACCAC Volleyball Player of the Week Award of the 2007 season for her performances this past week. It is the second time that Paniagua has received this honor since becoming a Lady Matador in the summer of 2006, and it’s the second major accolade that the program has received within a week. The team itself received a #18 national ranking in last week’s NJCAA Preseason Poll-their first ranking in just less than three years.
Paniagua found her stride as a Lady Matador toward the end of last season, when she began terrorizing opposing defenses with her spiking, and became a great 1-2 punch with then freshman setter Tagiafouga Wooley. Paniagua earned her first ACCAC Volleyball POW Award in mid-October last year, and it set the tone for the rest of her season, which ended with her earning 1st Team All-Region I/All-ACCAC honors and with the team earning its 7th straight Region I title. This season, it’s only been four games, but the native of Stockton, California, has come out of the gates on a tear, averaging 14 kills per match, including a season-high 22 kills last Wednesday at Phoenix College. Her hitting percentage is a whopping .462, which is currently tops in the ACCAC, and her 1.38 blocks per game average is also tops in that ACCAC category.
Paniagua and the Lady Mats now get focused on the road, which they will see for the next 29 days’ worth of matches, beginning tomorrow night in the Phoenix area when they battle the Lady Cougars of South Mountain Community College. The Lady Matadors’ next home game happens Wednesday night, October 3rd, when they host a revenge match with the Phoenix College Lady Bears at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus.
