Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced that AWC Volleyball player Marluci (pronounced ‘mahr-LOO-see’) ‘Luci’ Toazzi has been named as ACCAC Volleyball Co-Player of the Week Award for her performances this past week.  Toazzi (pronounced ‘toh-AH-zee’) shares the award this week with Glendale Lady Gauchos’ middle blocker Ashley Bates. Toazzi becomes the second Lady Matadors’ Volleyball player to be honored with the award in as many weeks, following the lead of middle blocker Patty Paniagua, who earned the season’s inaugural award last week.

Toazzi has spent the last week or so sending notice to conference and non-conference opponents that she will be a force to be reckoned with this season.  After warming up for this past week with a triple-double performance August 31st against Chandler-Gilbert followed by a performance the next night against Eastern Arizona where she missed another triple-double (by one ace), Toazzi started the week with an 18-kill performance in the road win over South Mountain Wednesday night. Toazzi then turned her sights on El Cajon-site of the Cuyamaca Coyote Classic this weekend. Toazzi not only helped lead the Lady Matadors to the tournament title, but also made sure the Lady Mats wouldn’t lose a game in any of their five matches. Toazzi earned the Cuyamaca Coyote Classic Tournament Most Valuable Player Award because of her accomplishments. For the week, the native of  Ivoti, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil, averaged 3.6 kills and 3.6 digs per game while having a .500 hitting percentage for the tournament. On the season, Toazzi is tops in the ACCAC in aces (1.423 aces per game); 3rd in hitting percentage (.413), 5th in digs (4.58 per game) and 6th in kills (3.73 per game).

Toazzi and the Lady Mats get back into conference play tonight when they travel to Mesa to face the Lady Thunderbirds tonight starting at 7PM. The Lady Matadors’ next home game happens Wednesday night, October 3rd, when they host a revenge match with the Phoenix College Lady Bears at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus.
