(SNSW) Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced today that Kofa High alumnus Liz Moreno has officially signed a letter of intent to attend AWC for the 2007-08 school year and play for the Lady Matadors’ women’s basketball team this winter.
The announcement comes as Moreno assists her new coach, AWC Women’s Basketball Coach Patrick Cunningham, on the first day of the 2007 Arizona Western Girls’ Basketball Camp at Ron Watson Middle School Gym, and just over a month before Moreno begins her college studies at Arizona Western College for the 2007 fall semester.
For the Lady Matadors, they’re adding the most decorated girls’ high school basketball player in the area from the past year to their program. For Moreno, it gives her a chance to get an education close to home and still try to pick up where she left off last February in front of the hometown fans. The Yuma native has been in the Yuma basketball limelight since she broke into the Kofa Lady Kings’ starting lineup as a sophomore in the winter of 2004. Moreno-along with a team included Mary Kaye Garcia, who just completed a two-year career with the Lady Matadors-helped resurrect a Lady Kings’ girls’ basketball program that won just one game two years before her arrival, and helped lead them to the Arizona 5A State Basketball Tournament all three years she spent on the varsity squad. Moreno was one of the leading scorers on the Kofa squad all three years, but saved the best for last, taking the Gila Valley Region by storm last year. As a senior starting guard, Moreno led the Gila Valley Region in scoring with a 17.5 points per game average. She also averaged just over 4 rebounds and just fewer than 4 steals per contest. Moreno was dead-on from the field, with a 51% field goal percentage and a 67% free throw percentage. Moreno’s top game of the season came on January 11th of this year as she set a new Kings’ girls’ basketball single-game scoring record with 35 points, and the Kings’ 85 points that night at Casa Grande was also a new team single-game scoring mark. Moreno took the team to the state tournament once again, this time by helping the Kings to beat Cibola and win their first-ever Gila Valley Region Championship. Moreno was named Gila Valley Region Most Valuable Player, 1st Team All-GVR, as well as Arizona Class 5A All-State Honorable Mention.
Moreno becomes the Lady Matadors’ first women’s basketball signee from the Yuma area this year. The Lady Matadors finished the 2006-07 season with an 18-12 overall record. The Lady Matadors are scheduled to begin their 2007-08 season November 2nd at the Southern Utah Tournament in Cedar City, Utah.
