DeeDee Fogg and AWC Softball Team Honored

Yuma, Arizona – July 12, 2006 -- Arizona Western College announced that AWC Softball player DeeDee Fogg has been named as an NJCAA Academic All-American. This comes on the same day that the AWC Softball team as a whole was named as an NJCAA Academic All-American Team.

Fogg led the way for the softball team academically, but she was only one of several reasons why the Lady Matadors were named as an NJCAA Academic All-American Team. A playoff team on the field-reaching yet another Region I Playoff in ’06-they were a championship squad in the classroom, combining for a stellar 3.1 collective grade point average. Their head coach says that while much of the credit goes to the players, there was also a factor behind the scenes that made a big difference. “I’m very thankful to the college for providing us coaches with some extra time and resources this past year to do our jobs better,” said Pam Stone. “I was able to take those resources and time, and devote them almost exclusively to helping our players academically. And as you can see, the players responded.” This includes a collective 3.32 GPA during the 2005-06 fall semester for the 16 members of the team. “It’s the ultimate in team success-when they can win in the classroom, and on the field,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “The AWC Softball team has become the barometer for all of our student-athletes in demonstrating how you can balance class time and playing time, and be equally successful at both. I’m so proud of what Pam and the ladies have accomplished this year.”
