(SNSW) - Arizona Western College announced yesterday that pitcher Josh Trejo, who has signed an official letter of intent to attend AWC this fall and play for the Matador Baseball team next spring-was selected early this afternoon in Day 2 of the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.  Trejo was the seventh pick of the 27th round by the Milwaukee Brewers, and the 821st pick overall.

Trejo signed with the Matadors in February to join high school teammate and current Matadors' infielder Stephen Barbosa on the 2008 AWC Baseball roster.  Trejo hails from the Northern California town of Union City near Oakland, and like Barbosa, was a star at James Logan High School.  As a junior in 2006, Trejo a 6-foot-1, 215-pound left-hander was one of the younger starters on the senior-laden squad, but showed his potential well, going 5-4 on the mound for the Colts with a 3.74 earned run average.  He showed great control during the 2006 campaign, walking only 24 batters in 54 1/3 innings while fanning 85 hitters.  His best performance of the year was a 13-strikeout performance against Irvington in which he allowed only 2 hits in 7 2/3 innings.  Trejo showed enough promise to get the start in 2 of the Colts' 4 CIF Playoff games that year.

Trejo knew there would be extra pressure on him coming back for his senior season, since the team would be much younger with 7 of the previous year's starters graduated.  Trejo helped erase any doubts about the new-look 2007 Logan Colts' success by becoming the teams ace and helping them to a 20-win season and a return to the CIF Playoffs.  Trejo opened the North Coast Section 3-A East Bay playoffs with a dominating performance against San Leandro, striking out eight batters on the way to a complete-game win.

The choice by the Brewers of Trejo was no surprise to AWC Head Baseball Coach John Stratton.  "We felt all along that this was a special signing, and the draft just reinforces that," remarked Stratton after Trejo was picked.  "Josh has a great upside, and if he comes to school to play for us, he'll have a great chance to move himself up in next year's draft."  Trejo now has until August 15th to decide if hell sign with the Brewers or come to Yuma to play for AWC.
