Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced today that AWC Volleyball player Cayla Knapp has been named as ACCAC Division I Volleyball Player of the Week Award for her performances this past week. The honoring of Knapp means that an AWC Volleyball player has received at least a portion of the award each of the three weeks it has been given out this season, following sophomore middle blocker Patty Paniagua (September 2nd) and freshman outside hitter Luci Toazzi (September 9th).
Knapp has continued to be a steadying influence on the squad, and they certainly needed her to come through with plenty of that steady hand this week. Playing seven matches in the span of just 68 hours-with four of those matchups coming against teams either ranked in the NJCAA Top 11 or mentioned in the poll as ‘Also Receiving Votes’-Knapp turned it on at the right time for the Lady Matadors. Born in San Diego but raised in northern Nevada and California, Knapp showed plenty of offensive power during the Valley of the Sun Tournament in Scottsdale this weekend, hitting 30 kills and firing 8 aces in a total of 17 games while keeping a hitting percentage of 31.1%. Knapp-who plays both middle blocker and Libero-was also a stalwart defensively, recording 19 blocks and 31 digs over the 7 matches.
Knapp and the Lady Mats continue their month-long road trip in Tucson tomorrow night when they’ll return to ACCAC play to battle the Pima Aztecs in a 7PM first serve. The Lady Matadors have an overall record of 12 wins and 5 losses, and are 5-1 in conference play-which places them in 1st place in Division I and in 3rd place overall. The Lady Matadors’ next home game happens Wednesday night, October 3rd, when they host a revenge match with the Phoenix College Lady Bears at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus.
