Yuma, Arizona – April 13, 2007 -- Arizona Western College announced today that Lady Matadors’ basketball player Kim Etol has signed a letter of intent to attend Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York, next fall, and play basketball for the Lady Seawolves next season.
The announcement comes just days after Etol earned NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors for her efforts on the basketball court this past season. Seawolves’ officials confirmed the signing early this afternoon. Etol becomes the first Matador basketball player this season to officially sign a letter of intent with a 4-year school. The Las Vegas, Nevada, native has put herself in the position of being able to move on to an NCAA Division I school ever since she first stepped foot on the AWC campus back in August of 2005. Etol played in all 60 games that the Lady Mats played in during her time with the program, and started all but 5 of those. As a freshman, she and sophomore point guard Jeanette Tucker were the leaders of the team, and Etol’s stats reflected that. Etol was right behind Tucker in scoring at 14.8 points per contest (9th-best in the ACCAC), and she hit 74 3-point goals during her freshman season-easily the high mark on the team. For her efforts, she was named 3rd Team All-ACCAC in 2005-06. But when Tucker graduated, Etol took over as the undisputed leader of the squad as a sophomore, and responded with a big season. After being named as an NJCAA Preseason All-American prior to the start of the campaign, Etol averaged a team-high 17 points per game in 2006-07, good enough for 6th in the ACCAC Scoring leaders. Etol was also the conference’s 2nd-most accurate shooter at the free throw line, hitting 97 of her 121 attempts-an 80.2% clip. She also led the team in assists, steals, 3-point field goal percentage and minutes played. Etol was named 1st Team All-Region I and 1st Team All-ACCAC in early March, and then followed that up earlier this week by being named NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American. this season. “The best thing about this signing is that Stony Brook is the right fit athletically, but even more so academically,” said AWC Women’s Head Basketball Coach Patrick Cunningham. “She’s going to get the best of both worlds, because she’s going to be part of a very competitive Division I basketball program, and she’s going to be able to pursue her career path with the fine academic program that Stony Brook offers. I’m proud of everything she’s accomplished at AWC, and Kim will continue to represent our program in a positive light as she moves on.” Etol plans to enter Stony Brook’s pre-dental program beginning this summer. Etol enters a basketball program that came within two games of an NCAA Tournament berth this season. The 2nd-seeded Seawolves were upset in the America East Conference Tournament Quarterfinals last month by upstart 7th-seed University of Maryland-Baltimore County (who wound up winning the tournament and advancing to the NCAA Tournament). SBU finished the season with an 18-11 mark in their 3rd season under head coach Maura McHugh, who previously coached the Arizona State Sun Devils and the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs. |
