Yuma, Arizona -- Arizona Western College announced that all seven of its athletic programs will participate in the construction of the Stewart Vincent Wolfe Memorial Playground at the Yuma West Wetlands Park beginning today. The two-week project kicks off this week, will run through the end of next week, and will be constructed entirely by volunteers from around the Yuma community. The playground will be a one-of-a-kind playground that will be constructed based upon ideas from local school children. As a true community-based project, all funding for playground materials and supplies will be raised within the community. Local business owners Ron and Stephanie Martin have donated a lead gift of $100,000, and several other donors have followed suit. The playground is actually named after one of Martin’s close friends, the late Stewart Wolfe. Construction of the playground will be divided into three volunteer work shifts per day throughout the length of the project. “This is going to be a rewarding project-now and for years to come,” remarked AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “We couldn’t think of a better way to give back to the community, and from the moment Ronnie Martin brought up the topic to us several months ago, we were really excited about the possibility of helping out. Our coaches and student-athletes have been very receptive to the idea of pitching in, and we’re looking forward to being a part of this.” The AWC Baseball Matadors will be the first of AWC’s seven athletic programs to participate, arriving for the Thursday morning shift from 8AM until noon to join with other project volunteers. Both AWC Basketball teams will then follow suit for the Thursday evening (5:30-8:30PM) shift. The AWC Volleyball and Football teams will spend much of the day volunteering for the project on Friday, February 9th, with the AWC Soccer team helping out over the first weekend, and the AWC Softball team coming in to volunteer during the afternoon shift (12:30-5PM) on Sunday, February 11th. Coaches and student-athletes will be available for media interviews during these times while the media is compiling stories on this exciting and rewarding project. |
