Yuma, Arizona – November 21, 2006 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the 2006 AWC Softball Team has continued to receive awards for their academic prowess, having been named as a Top 10 All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The NFCA honors high school and collegiate softball teams for their success in the classroom, and names those top academic performers from six membership categories: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, community college and high school. The Lady Matadors were one of only 10 teams from the community college level to receive the honor nationwide from the NFCA. Four individual members of the ’06 Lady Matadors were also named as NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes: outfielders Ashlee Ackerman and Lisa Stratton, and infielders DeeDee Fogg and Shannon Galanek. The Lady Matadors’ cumulative grade point average of 3.24 ranked 8th among the top NFCA Softball teams on the community college level (Iowa Western’s 3.459 was 1st). “It’s a great honor, and the athletes certainly have to take credit for what they did,” remarked a proud Pam Stone, AWC’s Head Softball Coach. “The ability for them to stay focused on why they’re here, and still be able to make it to the Region I Playoffs just shows their dedication and their ability to prioritize.” Meanwhile, because their individual good grades, Ackerman, Fogg, Galanek and Stratton were all honored as NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes for the 2005-06 academic year. It’s the second academic award that Fogg has earned-following the NJCAA Academic All-American honor she received this past summer. Ackerman is now studying at the University of Illinois-Chicago (and playing center field for the Flames’ softball team), while Fogg will be attending the University of Arizona this coming spring. Both Galanek and Stratton have returned for their sophomore seasons at AWC, and are expected to be big contributors to the Lady Matadors’ softball successes this coming spring. The Lady Matadors’ 2007 softball season commences January 27th in Thatcher against Odessa Community College.
